Moen GXP33C Review [A Decent Choice]

This article is a review of Moen GXP33C garbage disposal.

Moen has been in the spotlight long enough to know what its customers want. The company manufactures washroom products and kitchen appliances, but their specialty lies in making luxurious shower heads which have gotten them quite a reputation in the market. Of course, their showerheads will not be our subject today. Instead, we will be reviewing Moen’s GXP33C garbage disposal machine. Before we get to the main review, do you know that Moen also sells garbage disposals by the name of “Waste King”? Yes, Waste King is owned by Moen as well. Both are respected and renowned brands that manufacture quality garbage disposals.

However, today’s turn is for Moen as we will be analyzing their product GXP33C. From the good to the bad, all will be covered.

Features of Moen GXP33C

Moen’s GXP33C is a compact garbage disposal that comes with a 1/3 HP motor. Ideal for small families that produce minimal amounts of kitchen waste, this unit is the only garbage disposal from Moen that comes with a 1/3 HP motor. Moen’s target customer for this disposal is the small household, that hosts people no more than around two or four. That is why it is designed to occupy as little space as possible and comes with light features such as 1900 RPM speed and an inexpensive price. Let us now take a step further and see all the features Moen’s GXP33C is equipped with.

Motor Power

Since Moen’s GXP33C is made for light use, the disposal machine comes with a 1/3 HP permanent magnet Vortex motor. Operating on a continuous feed system, the disposal is able to grind kitchen waste easily as long as it is not given more than it can chew. Of course, the 1/3 HP motor is not built to withstand rough and tough food remains. Daily life soft kitchen waste such as fruits, leftover pasta, or vegetable tops can be transformed into pulp by the GXP33C. Considering this is a product of Moen’s light series, the machine’s grinding performance is acceptable.

Speed and Jam-Resistance

A garbage disposal’s performance is highly affected by the swiftness it yields. Higher speed levels mean that the machine can get the job done fast. The grinding impellers will also spin fast, which will result in fewer chances of them getting stuck into waste. Moen’s GXP33C comes with a speed level of 1900 RPM. In general, this is nothing special but for a compact disposal with a 1/3 HP motor, this feature is indeed a game-changer. You’ll find way better speed from other garbage disposals of Moen, but then again, smaller units like the GXP33C work differently.

Reviews state that the disposal catches a high pace within a second after it is turned on. So, you don’t have to worry about the machine warming up before it starts turning your kitchen waste into a paste. Soft foods are easily handled at high speed. Even if the GXP33C had a ¼ HP motor, we believe its speed will compensate for the lack of grinding strength.

Sound Level

Generally speaking, garbage disposals with HP below ½ are not that noisy. This is because their motors are light and they are designed for minimal grinding. Since they are not entirely quiet, most still have a layer of foam in them to hold the vibrations into place. The GXP33C doesn’t come with any technology that reduces its noise. The majority of customer reviews report that the machine is neither too loud nor quiet, but quieter than other disposals of the same level. So, noise won’t be a big problem if you decide to go for the GXP33C.

Look and design

GXP33C is specifically built to fit in tight storage spaces. It has a compact design and weighs no more than just 8 lbs. As for its height, the machine barely extends above a foot of length. Lightweight and small size make the perfect duo for a compact garbage disposal. Moving on to the aesthetics, the disposal does look appealing. It has a black body in the shape of a thermos and a chrome mount as its head. Moen’s garbage disposals are although known for their looks, the GXP33C is just okay. However, you will find the black exterior looking neat and clean for a long while due to its material. Lastly, the disposal also comes with a removable splashguard that allows you to clean it easily.

You don’t have to change your garbage disposal every couple of years. If you’re doing so, you’ve been buying the wrong ones. The life of a quality garbage disposal can easily extend above a decade, some even come with a 7+ year warranty. So, what decides the disposal’s ability to stay operational throughout the years without malfunctioning? The answer lies in its internal body. The GXP33C comes with an anti-corrosion chamber along with grinding components derived from galvanized steel. Now, galvanized steel isn’t the ideal material when it comes to durability but it can still give the disposal a good time below the sink.

Though stainless steel would have been better, the GXP33C is average when it comes to durability. It does have a few other parts made from stainless steel like the drain flange finish. That’s going to help contribute to the longevity of the machine too.

Once you buy the GXP33C, installation should not be a nuisance. Moen’s GXP33C can fit easily with standard septic systems. It comes with a 3-bolt lock and mount system that can be of major assistance if you’re replacing your old garbage disposal with the GXP33C. Moen specifically designed the mount to be compatible with mainstream other brands such as Waste King and InSinkErator. A quick read of the instruction manual is all you will need. After that, you’ll handle the installation like a pro, even if you haven’t installed a disposal before. Also, the disposal’s weight and size would be of great help during installation. You probably won’t need help from another person in mounting the machine.

A feature worth appreciating is the pre-installed power cord that comes with the disposal. This will save you both time and money as you won’t have to buy a cord separately. So, all you have to do is dismount your old garbage disposal and mount your new one on then plug in the cord. It’s as simple as that.

We all know that low-powered garbage disposals are inexpensive and such is the case with the GXP33C. Moen charges you no more than around $100 for this unit. It appears that the price is neither too much nor too less, it’s quite fair for a disposal with minimal grinding power. However, there are certain garbage disposals out there that bring some tough competition for the GXP33C, especially from Waste King. Nonetheless, the price is just fine and worth the features this machine brings to the table.

Now, coming to the warranty, you’ll find different information regarding the warranty from marketplaces such as Amazon or Home Depot. Moen’s official website says the GXP33C comes with a 5-year in-home warranty. An in-home warranty means a professional will come by your house to take a look if a component of the machine fails within the warranty period. Moen usually does not give warranties above 2 years to its smaller units, so we have to say that this is certainly a relief for new customers. Speaking of, Moen is known for its brilliant customer service. So, even if something goes wrong with the disposal, Moen will have your back.

Pros of Moen’s GXP33C

Features are not enough to convince a customer to buy. A curious customer will ask what benefit are they getting out of this machine and how will it serve them. To answer these questions, below are some of the pros of Moen’s GXP33C:

Space saver

Space can be a major issue for small homes. You want a garbage disposal without compromising the space in the sink cabinet at the same time. Compact garbage disposals, or the GXP33C in this particular case, saves the day. The disposal is as small as a thermos and you’ll be left with plenty of space in the cabinet. Homeowners are then free to store their kitchen supplies while the GXP33C does its job mounted at the corner.

The affordability of this model is a great advantage. At max, the machine will cost you around $100, from some stores, not even a full $100. Now for a disposal with a 1/3 HP motor, the GXP33C falls in the average price category. However, it does boast some other special features such as a pre-installed cord and 1900 RPM speed that really make the price fair. For a garbage disposal machine like GXP33C, $100 is simply not a big deal. The machine is affordable and capable of grinding your food residue.

Moen is not an unknown brand that you cannot rely upon. They own Waste King and have several high-rated garbage disposals of their own available in the market. Also, they’re giving you a 5-years of in-home warranty for this small unit, which is excellent. Remember, the longer the warranty, the more reliable the garbage disposal is. These machines can corrode internally with time. Having a warranty backing your purchase up and that too from a respected brand is undoubtedly an advantage you have on your side.

Easy to install

No negative customer reviews were found regarding the installation process of the GXP33C. Not only is the machine compact and lightweight, but it’s also simple to install. Moen equipped this unit with the Universal Xpress Mount that fits almost all standard 3-bolt mounts. Even if your previously used flange and seal are in bad condition, a quick switch with the new ones would allow you to have the new disposal running within half an hour. Let us not forget the addition of a pre-installed power cord that makes electric connections easier.

Cons of Moen’s GXP33C

We’ve covered the features of the GXP33C and its pros as well. Now it’s time to come towards the bitter side of the coin, the cons. The GXP33C has two main drawbacks that are discussed below:

Cannot handle big bits of kitchen waste

Unfortunately, the 1/3 HP motor of the GXP33C cannot handle anything more than just soft food. Throw in some peels or bones in there and the little guy will most probably get jammed. This disposal is built to withstand tiny bits of food leftovers from the plates of a small family. It cannot grind hard remains such as bones. So, if you’re on the hunt for a small disposal that is powerful, then the GXP33C isn’t what you’re looking for.

Not entirely noise-free

Despite the GXP33C having a light motor, the disposal is not entirely free from vibration and noise. This unit comes with no special insulation technology which has led many customers to state that it’s not that quiet. A possible reason behind Moen not equipping this unit with anything special to suppress its noise might be to keep the cost as low as possible. After all, the GXP33C is a compact disposal. It’s not the quietest nor the loudest. You’ll probably get used to its noise with time.

The Bottom Line

Moen GXP33C Lite Series PRO 1/3 HP Continuous Feed Garbage Disposal, Power Cord Included , Black

Quick Overview

  • 1/3 HP motor
  • 1900 RPM speed

Other than that, it has durable components, a moderately powerful motor, and a Universal mount to make installation a hassle-free procedure. For a price around $100, the GXP33C is definitely worth buying.
