There are hundreds of garbage disposals you can buy from stores and online marketplaces. They come in all sizes and colors.
One thing people look for when buying a new garbage disposal for their home is its build quality. Is the build quality of the disposer good enough to withstand years of rough use? Will it corrode and leak?
And you have every right to worry about corrosion and rust as garbage disposals are in constant contact with water. To survive for many years, their grinding components and grinding chamber need to be made of corrosion-resistant materials. There are garbage disposals made of galvanized steel. Galvanized steel will rust and leak after some time when it loses its protective zinc coating. There are also some garbage disposals whose grinding chambers are made of high-quality plastic. As you know, plastic won’t rust. Then there are those made of stainless steel.
The best-built garbage disposals are made of stainless steel. Stainless steel is resistant to corrosion and rust. This material is strong, durable, and shiny, and it lasts for many years without getting destroyed. It is also the cheapest of metals with that level of resistance to corrosion.
While no garbage disposal is fully made of stainless steel, plenty of ones use a stainless steel grinding chamber and grinding components. Here are the best of those;
InSinkErator Evolution Excel
An excellent garbage disposal with top-notch features. Evolution Excel excels in all aspects of a disposal whether it is power, reliability, build quality, noise insulation, or anything. Made of high-quality stainless steel, this disposal is an excellent choice.
There is hardly a list of garbage disposals where InSinkErator Evolution Excel is not listed. It is the most popular and silent garbage disposal in the market.
It is a 1 HP garbage disposal that is made of stainless steel. In addition to being built with the most resistive metal to corrosion, it comes with awesome technologies like AutoReverse, SoundSeal, and Jam Sensor. The Auto Reverse technology changes the direction of the rotation of its blades in case of a jam while the Jam Sensor technology helps to predict jams and increase the torque of the motor to cut through it. The SoundSeal technology used in it makes sure that the garbage disposal runs ultra-quiet.
Evolution Excel also comes with a 3-stage grinding system where there are multiple grinding components to cut the food wastes into much smaller sizes than in a standard disposal. All these grinding components are made of stainless steel. Its grinding chamber can house 40 oz of food wastes at a time. This grinding chamber too, is made of stainless steel, so you don’t have to worry about any of its interiors rusting due to being constantly wet with water.
Also, the sink flange and the mounting system that comes with Evolution Excel garbage disposal are made of stainless steel. In addition to all of these, the company offers a long, 10-year warranty for this model, and it even covers rust.
InSinkErator Evolution Select Plus
This good-looking, 3/4 HP disposal is made of high-quality stainless steel components. It also boasts a 2-stage grinding system and a top-notch noise insulation system. Continue reading to know more.
Evolution Select Plus is a garbage disposal that is exclusively sold in HomeDepot stores. Its body looks great in that red color (or magenta?). This one is slightly smaller in size than the Evolution Excel, but its interiors are made of stainless steel. A 3/4 HP induction motor powers it, and it runs at a speed of 1725 RPM.
EvolutionSelect Plus garbage disposal comes with a 2-stage grinding system similar to the one in Evolution Excel. This grinding system uses GrindShear Ring and a lug system to grind food wastes finer. These grinding components, as well as its grinding chamber, are made of stainless steel.
This garbage disposal also uses SoundSeal technology which makes it quiet but not as quiet as the Evolution Excel. It uses a 3-bolt mounting assembly to connect it to the sink. This mounting assembly also is made of stainless steel, and so is the sink flange that comes with this disposer.
This garbage disposal comes with a 9-year warranty which covers the cost of labor and parts. There is also a very similar garbage disposal model; Evolution Select (the former one is Select Plus) which is also made of stainless steel. Their specifications are almost similar which is I am listing them together. This latter one is covered under a 4-year warranty.
InSinkErator Evolution Pro 1100 XL
Slightly more powerful than the most powerful household garbage disposal, this unit is equipped with all top-notch features available. In addition, its stainless steel build gives it a long life. This is an excellent choice if you are looking for the most powerful and strongly built garbage disposal.
Evolution Pro is a slightly powerful version of the Evolution Excel model. It comes with a motor that generates 1.1 HP of power. I am not sure why it has a slightly powerful motor and what the need for it is. Whatever it is, this garbage disposal has teh longest warranty among all InSinkErator disposal models. It comes with a 12-year in-home warranty.
Also, all the grinding components and the grinding chamber of Pro 1100XL are made of alloy stainless steel. It uses a 3-stage grinding system consisting of multiple grinding components, and all these components are resistant to rust and corrosion. I forgot to mention that the grinding chamber of this one and the two disposals listed above comes with a LeakGuard Liner technology that perfectly seals the chamber to prevent any leaks.
As you can see in the picture, it uses the same 3-bolt assembly used in the other two garbage disposals listed here. The good thing about having a mounting assembly made of stainless steel is that it reduces vibrations and hence a lot of noise. In fact, the noise insulation measures used in this garbage disposal include an anti-vibration sink mount to reduce such vibrations. So, in addition to being resistant to corroding elements, this mounting also helps to make this disposer quieter.
If you are looking for a powerful stainless steel garbage disposal, Pro 1100 XL is the one for you.
InSinkErator Evolution Essential XTR
This is a reliable, compact garbage disposal having stainless steel grinding components. It is powered by a 3/4 HP motor, has a 2-stage grinding system, noise insulation, and a long warranty. Make sure to check its specifications and features before going to the next product.
This is another garbage disposal from InSinkErator that is made of stainless steel. Let me be brief, all garbage disposals in the Evolution series of InSinkErator are made of stainless steel.
Evolution Essential XTR is a 3/4 HP garbage disposal that comes with the standard Vortex induction motor by InSinkErator. It runs at 1725 RPM and provides enough power to grind the food wastes from any normal household. Like other garbage disposals in the Evolution series, the Essential XTR also comes with a MultiGrind system. In this one, the food waste undergoes two stages of grinding. Its grinding chamber can accommodate 34.6oz of food wastes at a time. Its grinding components and grinding chamber are made of stainless steel, and it uses LeakGuard Liner technology to prevent leaks.
Besides the grinding chamber and grind components, its sink flange and mounting assembly are made of stainless steel, just like all other Evolution series garbage disposals.
One thing unique about this garbage disposal is that it comes with a sink top switch and a pre-installed power cord. For all other models listed above, the power cord is optional. It is also quiet like the other Evolution series garbage disposals.
And, it comes with a 9-year, we come to home warranty!
KitchenAid Superba KCDS100T
This KitchenAid disposal is a budget-friendly alternative to Evolution Excel. It comes with many top-notch features including noise insulation. It also has a Jam-Sensor which is seen only in InSinkErator Excel models. So if you want a reliable, stainless steel-made alternative to Evolution Excel, this is the one for you.
Superba is the name of a series of garbage disposals by KitchenAid like Evolution is to InSinkErator. KCDS100T is its model name. I don’t know what the letters in its model name mean, but the number 100 stands for 1 HP. Likewise, there is Superba KCDS075T which is has a rated power of 3/4 HP.
KitchenAid is a sister company of InSinkErator. So Superba KCDS100T is KitchenAid’s version of Evolution Excel. Even though both garbage disposal models are very different in looks, the technology used in them is the same. Both of them come with a 3-stage grinding system, ultra-quiet operation, and Jam Sensor. But KCDS100T is slightly smaller in dimension than the Evolution Excel.
And, just like you guessed, its grinding components and its grinding chamber are made of stainless steel. I am not sure if it uses the LeakGuard Liner technology; there is no mention of it anywhere. But it probably uses this technology because this garbage disposal is basically a copy of the InSinkErator disposals.
KCDS100T garbage disposal comes with a 7-year warranty.
InSinkErator Evolution Compact
Evolution Compact is among the top-selling disposal units owing to its compact size, price, features, build quality, and quietness. If you are overwhelmed by choices, buy this disposal, you can’t go wrong.
This is my favorite garbage disposal. It is short, its 3/4 HP rating is not too much or too less, it is reasonably quiet, and it is priced lower than many other garbage disposals in the Evolution series. In short, this is one garbage disposal that gives maximum value for your money.
Evolution Compact is one of the most popular 3/4 HP garbage disposals in the USA. All other compact models in the Evolution series of InSinkErator were introduced after the success of this model.
The internal grinding components of this garbage disposal are made of stainless steel. Its grinding chamber also is made of the same material, and it has a volume of 34.6oz. It uses the same 3-bolt mounting assembly used in all other InSinkErator disposals, and this assembly, as well as the sink flange that comes with it, are made of stainless steel.
Evolution Compact comes with all the features of the other premium garbage disposals by InSinkErator. It has a 2-stage grinding system and good noise insulation as well. It is covered under a warranty of 8-years.
InSinkErator Evolution Cover Control
This is the only batch-feed type garbage disposal made of stainless steel on this list. It comes with a cover which also works as a switch to turn the disposal on and off. It is also quiet, feature-rich and made of stainless steel. Check this model to know more.
Evolution Cover control is a batch feed garbage disposal that is made of stainless steel. All other garbage disposals listed here so far are continuous feed-type disposals. If you want to know the difference between them, check this article; batch feed vs continuous feed disposals.
Even though this is a batch feed type disposal, it uses the standard 3-bolt mount and sink flange, all made of stainless steel, that comes with all InSiniErator models.
This is a 3/4 HP garbage disposal. The same Vortex induction motor used in all other InSinkErator disposals is used in this one as well. This is another model belonging to InSinkErator disposals’ premium line, and hence it comes with all the premium features. It has good noise insulation, a 2-stage grinding system, and stainless steel construction. It has a large grinding chamber that can accommodate 40oz of food wastes. The unit is also much larger in size (16 inches in height) than the other disposals in this series owing to its magnetic batch feed cover. This specially designed cover is used to turn the disposal on and off.
This unit comes with a 7-year long warranty.
InSinkErator Evolution Septic Assist
This garbage disposal stands out because it comes with a special enzyme that helps to break down food wastes in a septic tank. This is your best choice if your sink drains into a septic tank. Go check out all the features of this model.
Evolution Septic Assist is a garbage disposal specially made to address garbage disposals’ incompatibility with septic systems. Garbage disposals are not generally recommended for houses with septic systems because they could overload these systems. However, a properly sized system can accommodate a garbage disposal, and that’s why all disposal companies say their products are “suitable for properly sized septic systems.”
In case you are not sure if your septic system is properly sized, and honestly, there is no way to know this, you can opt for an Evolution Septic Assist garbage disposal. This model’s specialty is that it automatically injects an enzyme with bacteria that helps to break down food in the septic system and thus prevents the system from overflowing.
Evolution Septic is powered by a 3/4 HP Vortex induction motor which runs at 1725 RPM. It is quiet, has a 2-stage grinding system, and has an 8-year long warranty.
Just like all the other garbage disposals in this list, its grinding chamber and grinding components are made of stainless steel. So is the construction of its 3-bolt mounting and the sink flange. Its grinding chamber can accommodate 40 oz of food wastes. The disposal is compact in dimensions and can be fitted on any standard kitchen sink.
Waste King L-2600
This is the only garbage disposal with a 1/2 HP motor to have stainless steel grinding components. Usually, only those with 3/4 HP or more have a stainless steel construction. If you want only a 1/2 HP disposal, this is your only choice!
The grinding chamber of Waste King L-2600 is NOT made of stainless steel but high-quality plastic. However, its grinding components are made of stainless steel.
The reason why I included this one in this list is that there are no garbage disposals with a 1/2 HP rating that is made of stainless steel. People look for a stainless steel garbage disposal because they want it to last long without rust or corrosion. Waste King 2600 satisfies this criterion. Even though its grinding chamber is made of plastic this material has been used in these disposals for decades, and they are proven to be reliable. And plastic doesn’t rust. So I don’t see any reason why those looking for a stainless steel garbage disposal shouldn’t buy this one.
I love Waste King garbage disposals because they are worth every penny. They are cheap compared to InSinkErator models, they all come with a pre-installed power cord, and they use high-speed motors that jam less often. Yes, this Waste King garbage disposal comes with a 1/2 HP permanent motor that runs at 2700 RPM. This helps to grind the food wastes into finer sizes without the help of any additional grinding stages.
The mounting used on this garbage disposal is different from those on InSinkErator’s. L-2600 uses EZ mounts which are made of high-quality plastic. Its sink flange is also made of the same material, but it is given a stainless steel finish to match the sink.
This garbage disposal comes with a warranty of 5-years, and it costs only 1/3rd of the InSinkErator models listed above. If you are not so inclined towards the material of construction, but the longevity of a garbage disposal, this Waste King unit is a good choice.
Does stainless steel rust?
Stainless steel rusts if constantly exposed to water and moisture. It is more resistant to rust and corrosion than other metals, but you are wrong if you think this metal will never rust. That is why it is called stain’less’, not stain’free’.
The reason why stainless steel is resistant to rust and corrosion is its chromium content. The chromium in it creates a layer of chromium oxide on its surface just like copper gets a green layer over it. This layer of chromium oxide protects the steel from any direct contact with corroding elements like water. But if the surface scratches and water comes in constant contact with steel it will rust over time.
The resistance of steel to rust depends on the chemical composition of the steel. Some alloys of steel are very resistant to water, and garbage disposals use that kind of stainless steel.
How to maintain a stainless steel garbage disposal
Stainless steel may be immune to water but not to chemicals. Do not use any harsh chemicals to clean your garbage disposal or your kitchen sink. Harsh chemicals can corrode the steel components of your garbage disposal, leading to leaks. Once the disposer’s grinding chamber starts to leak, there is no way to repair it; you will have to replace the entire disposer unit.
It is also important to clean your garbage disposal once a week. The protective coating over the grinding components in the garbage disposal will develop scratches, taking time to heal. There is more chance of them turning into rust if the insides of the disposal are not clean. So clean it once a week with ice or baking soda and vinegar. Here are a few ways to clean a garbage disposal for your reference.
